About Danila Dilba Health Service
Danila Dilba Health Service (DDHS) is an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation providing culturally-appropriate, comprehensive primary health care and community services to Biluru (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) people in the Yilli Rreung (greater Darwin) region of the Northern Territory. Their mission is to provide high-quality clinical services that are culturally appropriate and ensure continuity of care. To do this, they recognised a need to attract the best talent to join their organisation. However, they faced significant challenges in talent attraction.
DDHS had great employee benefits and a unique offering but needed a way to promote these opportunities to the marketplace.
Their goals were to maintain the proportion of Aboriginal employees in their overall employee population, recruit and build their Aboriginal workforce across all levels and attract a limited number of local experienced Aboriginal candidates to fill positions. They also wanted to reduce their reliance on temporary clinical employees to improve continuity of care and build a high-performance culture to address internal issues such as absenteeism and turnover.
DDHS provide cultural awareness training for all employees to understand Indigenous cultures and attract more Aboriginal clinical team members, and needed a way to clearly demonstrate this to potential candidates. DDHS also wanted to build and develop an internal talent pool for leadership and management roles, and retain leaders and succession candidates to fill key positions.
“Employer Branding project helped Danila Dilba to strengthen our employer brand and market our unique employee value proposition across Australia.” – Olga Havnen, CEO
An Award-Winning Result
AHRI’s prestigious Stan Grant Indigenous Employment Award recognises excellence in Indigenous employment initiatives and programs in the workplace. The award is competitive and has a range of criteria for employers to meet to be eligibile.
For eligibility, employers need to demonstrate their initiatives and partnerships with local Indigenous communities in their industry. Their initiatives must provide a network for Indigenous employees and demonstrate career progression and opportunities.
Employers needed to share examples of education program scheduling and how they educate non-Indigenous employees on issues such as inclusion and the Indigenous community. They must provide details about how careers are developed and supported for Indigenous employees, statements from community leaders and evidence of links with the Indigenous communities.
Through their Employer Branding Project, our Specialists delivered brand messaging, written and video employee profile stories, which supplemented the examples DDHS needed to win the award.
We congratulate DDHS on winning this prestigious award. This mark of excellence solidified their new market position as an employer of choice.
In addition to the award, DDHS:
- reduced employee turnover by 14%
- reduced absenteeism by an average rate of -3.5 days per employee
- receive increased views of their careers website and recruitment advertisements
- consistently attract a higher volume of views and quality applications for each vacancy
- increased their quantity of applications and have a more engaged candidate pool
- reduced their time to hire and cost per hire
- are now less dependent on and temporary and casual employees.
Building a Powerful Employer Brand
DDHS partnered with Employment Office’s Employer Branding Specialists to strengthen their brand and attract great talent to meet their organisational goals.
Together, we undertook a collaborative Employer Branding Project to understand their unique offering.
Our Specialists used proven methodologies to Understand and Articulate their employer brand, then crafted their unique, authentic Employee Value Proposition and Employer Branding messaging.
After creating this brand messaging, our Specialists supported their Communications Officer in managing and growing key channels and promoting their new message to the marketplace.
We amplified their brand messaging through digital initiatives by restructuring and updating the copy on their careers website, and enhancing their recruitment advertisement copy. We also showcased their team members, values and organisational culture through an attractive careers video. We also filmed individual employee profile stories to showcase roles they regularly recruit for, such as doctors, Aboriginal Health Practitioners, nurses and project officers. These videos were supplemented by written people stories.
